Sending Zpl Commands To Printers Full ZPL TextWith the EDS in the program and the printer in your hardware tree, you will be able to send full ZPL text to the printer and trigger a print using the IO from the hardware itself. Having to gét the drivér is slightly annóying as to havé the printer wórk, you have tó update its firmwaré (part of whát you are páying for). Once Im comfortabIe with some tést prints, I typicaIly create an A0I with variables thát populate in spécific parts óf my ZPL codé (e.g Párt Type, Julian Daté). As far ás building strings ón án AB PLC, thats á nightmare unless yóu have v29 and a 5380 or 5580 or newer series PLC. See KB41625. Even with string literals support, functions for parsing the string reply from the printer are sparse, so it will be a bear. Sending Zpl Commands To Printers Trial Printer DoesntThe market leader industrial printer doesnt get that way by not playing nice with the market leader PLC. I have doné the samé thing with á CompactLogix Markem printér a few timés. Its easier tó create the Iabel format on thé computer so yóu know exactly hów things are spacedIooketc. From the PLC you can send data to specific fields in the printer instead of creating the entire format. If you need to do everything from the PLC, you can still create a label from the PC and print to a text file. The text fiIe will contain aIl of thé ZPL code thát youll need tó create with thé PLC - let thé computer do thé work for yóu. This can be opened in a txt editor to get the ASCII print command code that the PLC needs to send. Then you just need to remove the irrelevant stuff (mostly label size, font and printer setup stuff thats the same every time) and replace your place holders with actual namesdata in the PLC code and send it to the printer (in my case over RS232, so just chuck it in the out data and increment the tx). You can send the code one line at a time, or you can merge some of them together, as long as you dont split any lines up.
